Avast freezes explorer when opening folders

I've had Avast for years but the recent update has caused explorer to freeze up whenever I open folders that contain large files. especially installation files.

No matter what I disable it still does it. This affects all the computers I have that run XP SP3. When it freezes there is no obvious sign of Avast scanning until many seconds later, even up to a minute, when Avast starts spinning then releases everything.

Maybe my computers' specs are too low, but they are adequate for what I use them for: XP SP3, 1GB RAM, ~2GHz.

Is there a setting I have missed that will stop this behaviour?

- Which Avast..? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
- Which version..?
- Other security related software installed..?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?

The latest Avast: 12.3.2280
Forgot to mention it is the free version, sorry.

I use Malwarebytes, all clean there. Nothing else installed and this is affecting newly installed XP SP3.

I've used Avast for 15 years+.
