Cannot Connect to Server
« on: February 09, 2006, 08:03:07 PM »
I have been using Avast! Home 4.6.739 (vps0605-4), for some time. About Avast tells me my Update expires Jan 1, 2007. Yesterday, I started having a problem. I'm using Netscape (and have been all along) and I can't access my email. When I try to use Update it says " Cannot Connect to Server ". I have no problem accessing Web  Sites, just mail and update. Does anyone have any idea what's going on, here?

1. the lates version of avast is 4.6.763 and the latest VPS is 0606-3, so I suggest as soon as possible you update the program (after this is resolved), which will also update the VPS at the same time.

2. Have you tried the forum search button at the top of every page, this has been covered many times recently ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup and ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

You shouldn't require any proxy settings, so direct connection, no proxy should be the default setting. Unless your ISP/internet connection requires a proxy (I don't know anything about cable settings if they require a proxy) leave this alone.

Next step as mentioned above:

Thanks so much. Gotta go away for the weekend. I'll try the uninstall/Install next week. Don't have time, before that.
