I don't think that Quick Scan and Smart Scan are the same. I believe I've seen something about that in some post by Rejzor.
Yes, i've just compared them and there are some differences. You can also configure them by yourself but i don't think that's needed. Actually on-demand scans are poorer than the constant protection of the real time shields and i find them almost not necessary (i mean the virus ones). The real time shields are excellently configured and will check everything that tries to start. Honestly the on-demand virus scans are here for you to check for existing threats that are on your PC before you install the AV. I'm not sure if you agree with me but unless you make changes to the heuristics settings of the On demand scan they will not find something that the real time shield cannot.

"NEW: Avast Beta 17.1.2286"

Confusing for users.
Beta and final with the same build number :-\

It is intentional. We release exactly same build to release update channel once it soaked in beta channel. That, we believe, should improve quality in release update channel. And because these are exactly same binaries (you can bitwise compare them - no new build, just what is in beta become release) thus you see exactly same version number.

Why then if you check the MD5 or SHA-1 Hashes they are different from the downloaded offline installers for the beta and release versions of 17.1.2286, because I had downloaded both and checked.

That is very stupid since I use only Quick Scan. I guess I'll uninstall it.

The Smart and Quick scans are very different, if you only use the Quick Scan, then only run that don't run the smart scan.

AvastUI > Protection > Antivirus > Other Scans > Quick Scan. Not very Quick to access, but still there (buried).

Generally I don't do on-demand scans as they are much depreciated in a resident AV. Normally they are only going to be scanning files that would otherwise be inert or dormant. If they are active then the file system shield would scan them. You also have the behaviour shield and other scanning functions that don't run during an on-demand scan or it would take ages to complete.

Smart Scan only checks memory and startup entries, Quick Scan scans all that and entire system partition (partition where Windows is installed). So, yeah, there is quite some difference between both. They both use very relaxed scanning mechanisms which is a bit of a shame really. Emulator and heuristics should be cranked up to 11.

Good news, everyone!

We’re happy to announce that our newest AVAST Antivirus (17.1.2286) was born today.
It’s been a while since our last release in August, but we’ve been working hard to make this a substantial update packed with new features.

What's new:

- Improved user interface - simplified navigation, new brand colors, notification center

- Behavior Shield - better protects you against ransomware by monitoring running programs for suspicious behavior

- Game mode - helps reduce distractions and lag times by automatically prioritizing your game’s performance and suspending all unnecessary background notifications and processes while you play

- Free version no longer requires email registration

- Performance improvements - faster webpage loading and app launching thanks to optimized hashing algorithms

- Wi-Fi Inspector - previously called Home Network Security, this feature now detects even more problems and vulnerabilities on both home and public networks

- Passwords - faster UI and improved browser integration

- Real Site - our new name for SecureDNS, which prevents DNS hijacking to help you avoid visiting fake websites

- SafeZone browser - common settings for all modes, faster startup of bank mode, currency converter

How to install:

1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program

2. Or you can download and install from here

Unfortunately this version consistently gives BSOD on the windows login screen.
Had to roll back to the previous version in safe mode.

(Running Win7Pro with almost all updates installed, including quite a few optional ones - I'm thinking maybe one of the optional updates could have created a compatibility issue.)
(My system is very stable; uptime is usually weeks between restarts - which are due to updates only.)

I'm a programmer myself, so I know this kind of stuff happens sometimes.
Just posting it here to let others know you can fix this by booting into safe-mode in case you happen to be unlucky like me.

@Ben B: Had also BSOD. I deactivated Hardware virtualization support in Troubleshooting settings, afterwards the BSOD was gone.

After the new update, avast UI is not loading.
The error message says:
UI Failed to Load. This is really embarrassing. Your protection is running but UI Is having a really bad day.

With the new version all BattleNet Games crashed at start (WoW, Diablo, HotS etc)

I figured out its the Behavior Shield, with deactivated Shield all games run fine. Maybe its a "Launcher-thing" ? A program starts a program ?
Could be related. You can add Behavior Shield exclusions via Settings - Components - Behavior Shield (customize) - Exclusions.

I did as i figured out it was the Shield :)

So it helped? It is strange as I have no problem with Blizzard games on my desktop with AVG installed. There should be no difference in Avast from Behavior Shield perspective.
