Avbugreport.exe hogging CPU
« on: March 05, 2017, 04:50:50 AM »
For the last week or so, avbugreport.exe keeps spawning and knocking the hell out of my CPU rendering PC damn near useless.  What causes this and how do I stop it?

I've updated to latest version and subsequently tried a repair.  Still keeps happening.

Clean install doesn't work.  I can also confirm that this problem persists across various versions.  In other words, it's not just the *free* version of avast.  The pro and the internet security versions do EXACTLY the same thing.  My system will freeze up solid for many minutes while avbugreport.exe sucks the life out of my cpu

How ironic that the program called "avbugreport" itself has a bug (and a big one).

This is clearly something that avast people need to find / fix.  I don't submit tickets any longer as they are typically ignored or take weeks to reply.

My solution here (which has been working for hours so far) is to boot the system in safe mode.  Find any files that start with "avbugreport" under Program files (I found three - 2 exe's and 1 vpx).  Delete them all.  Now reboot.  avbugreport no longer exists on my PC and so it never launches.

So, will this problem come back with the next program update?  Probably.  I've disabled program updates on avast and put the damn thing in silent mode.  Perhaps I'll get a few weeks of peace.

The reply for a clean install was not directed at you. :)
