Tray Icon
« on: May 17, 2017, 05:26:20 PM »
I have only one little thing that annoys me and it appears it annoys everyone I talk to.
It is the tray icon.  It used to rotate and change from blue to orange as it rotated.
Now it is just the orange "Splash" icon, all it does is expand slightly when it is working/scanning.
I liked it a lot better before when it was round and I could see it working (whether it was or not) but now it is hard to see.
It would be a lot better if they went back to the old icon, or at least made it so as a blue or other colour went across the tray icon so as it could be seen to be working.
It is just a small thing, but I did like to see it working.
At least when I saw it starting to rotate as it did before I knew the computer was fully loaded and I could start using it.

I forgot to say that I know it changes shape, but it is hard to see, if it changed colour or turned round or something it would be easier to see.

I somehow doubt that this will happen as it would appear that avast are bringing many icons used in the past in other areas to that used in their corporate identity.

Such as the one at the top of this page, avast.com and on the Avast Mobile Security app.

It still 'rotates' just in a different manner:

Settings > General > check Animate the icon when scanning then select OK

I don't mind that they want to keep the logo the same everywhere, but I would just like it to be more visible when it moves in the icon tray.

Nice visual demo there, Bob.

There is.  Change your default setting for the taskbar from small to default size or larger:  Settings>Taskbar>Modify Windows taskbar settings as needed.

Would seem a larger icon would be easier to view?

I don't want to make it larger as it is a laptop and the screen has enough blocking the view as it is without making anything larger.
It the white bit in the middle came out to fill the logo and then went back to original size it would improve things a lot.  It would still leave the the same logo.

I'm afraid you'll need to learn to get used to the new animation. Highly doubt that it's going to change.
Especially since the default is set to no animation.
@mchain, Thanks. :)

Yes, well maybe as I am using the free edition I shouldn't moan about it.
However I think it is a useful feature that quite a few others have commented about since it changed.
It is just a small niggle that annoys me a little, but I guess I can live with it for a while.   :-\

I can't understand why anyone wants it animated anyway. I find anything like that on screen distracting and pointless. I don't want to see AVAST working I just want to know it there protecting my computer as discretely and unobtrusively as possible.

As already stated, the option to animate is off by default. If you want it, and some of us do, you need to turn it on.

Thank you for echoing my sentiments EXACTLY, Stop8.  (Insert Thumbs Up here.)
I agree with everything you said.

The new System Tray icon IS very small ... TOO small to be supposedly conveying a useful, visible active scanning indication in that morphing manner.
It IS very hard to see.
It sucks.
It bites.
It is inefficient as one has to stare at it for virtually 10 seconds before one can somewhat half-bakedly determine with only 90% certainty that it IS active.  :o

As it stands now, it's really just a System Tray Space Waster / Space Occupier.

Unfortunately, as some of the other members allude to, it is probably strongly heading in the direction of one of those things that is gonna stay as is, no matter what.

It's like way back when I tried at least twice to make a case for bringing back the Virus Definitions Download in Progress Indicator.  Much to my disappointment, it just didn't make the cut of things to incorporate.

It's broken anyway, when it starts twitching it becomes super annoying. And I have doubts it'll ever get fixed...

Yes, I know the animation is off by default and that is a something to thank AVAST for.  My comment was really just musing as to why anyone would want to switch on the animation at all.

The reason I want to see the animation is I like to see it working.
Or at least look as if it is doing something! lol
