Also, when you see that screen about the service not started it is an Avast thing; it takes it's time. Several clients reported this to me and I just tell them to click the "Restart the Service button and then go get coffee, make eggs, toast and bacon. 100% of the time when they get back it's happy again. With several SSD's this takes about 1 minute or less, with regular hard drives it can 5-10 minutes.
If it does not start after those 10 minutes then do as prescribed, uninstall, clean, then re-install. You will still get it, but it should start up again.
I have 39 computers to watch and maintain and some of those have Avast. Yes, this happens also with big updates to Avast, but it will start again.
