Updated Avast a couple of days ago and since then it has been blocking perfextly legitimate web sites, even The National Trust! Had to disable the Web Shiels function to get full access again.
Disabling https scanning has resolved the issue, I use Firefox and Safezone browsers, comodo hasn't caused an issue before. AOS not installed, no other AV software enabled.

The problem as I see it that it isn't consistent over all XP and Vista systems (or web sites), so trying to pin it down probably won't be easy. For now I would leave https enabled (to give better protection) and only disable it on sites that you have problems with. Unless you know the specific site with the problem, disabling the https or web shield does carry a risk.
I reported the bug with HTTPS scanning affecting Windows XP and Vista to the Avast devs behind the Web Shield on 28th June via Slack.
