Just another paranoid internetter

Hello all,

I will be staying around here for a short while as I try to secure my computer. Hopefully I posted my topic in the right section, as it does seem to be an awkward fit.

Here are some questions:

How can I log in to http-only websites safely? Firefox recommended that I use an unusual password, but to change my password I have to log in with the less-secure old one first.

Currently, the only issue detected by Avast Free's smart scan and wifi inspector is a weak wireless network password. Once that gets fixed and I follow all non-advanced-user tips it has given, how safe should I be? Keep in mind I have unknowingly logged in to several http sites in the past without any visible issues; might this affect security?

Anyone have a general "checklist" to complete for secure, private, and worry-free browsing? I did a few diff. Google account checks (all good), but wading through their large number of safety tips is a bit labyrinthine and getting a nonfree Avast is currently not an option.

Thanks in advance!
