Windows 10 update and Avast problem
« on: November 17, 2017, 08:49:15 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm using for my home Avast for a very long time. A few days ago Windows 10 update was released, and having Avast installed created a list of problems.  Spent a few days figuring out what to hell is going on.
1) So first symptom after update and restart was "Personalized settings update" window not responding
2) some of the apps stopped to respond (Origin, GOG, GeForce Experience, Discord)
3) could not kill explorer process from task manager

   - what ever I did ended with the same result
   - I have the remembered that I had the problem with update from Win 7 to Win 10, similar to this one.
   - so I have logged to "clean profile" (default profile created, basically I don't use it just for such cases as this one)
   - didn't had any problem, even mentioned not responding window
   - i tried to open some of the apps i have on the other profile like Origin (desktop app), Nvidia GeForce experience app, and none of the apps was working properly?!?!
   - so what I did was uninstall Avast and make reboot to log in to that usual profile I'm always using and none of the problems mentioned appeared again?!?

After that, I have installed Avast last version downloaded a 1h ago and to my surprise all the problems from above appeared again (except the problem with not responding window).

Any ideas what could cause this problem?
I also have NAS mapped as network drive, noticed that file explorer (w/ Avast on board) opens but tends to hang.
I didn't had problems with older versions of Avast, and from last week didn't had any new software installed, except Avast and win 10 update.

Would like to get back to installed Avast on system.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:

After reboot, I did install Avast again (tried repair also), to check if it's really causing the problem... and yes all the symptoms were back!
So I uninstalled it completely.

A repair and a clean install are two different things. From your reply, you only tried the first of the two remedies mentioned.
I have Avast and Windows 10 installed on 4 different systems covering both 32 and 64 bit without problems.
You also didn't mention if you have other security related programs installed.

maybe I wasn't clear I tried both, reinstall and clean install. And yeah no other anti-virus apps installed!

Previously I also didn't had much problems, but with the last update of Avast (last week), last win 10 update a day before, things got massed up.

What I suspect is combination of windows, avast and apps I have (which I cannot remove). and looking for way to help and resolve my situation.

Cheers,
K.
