Even after booting and restarting?
If you repair your installation through Control Panel, will the problem remain?

Well that works for the data base update (VPS), but I don't care to have avast automatically update the program.  I prefer to have it tell me there's an update available. I could be in the middle of something important and not able to reboot right after the new program install.  For this reason, I have mine set for 'ask when program updates are available'. This way when there's a program update, I get the 'green pop-up' telling me so - and if I'm not busy, I'll click on it to go ahead and update.  Otherwise, I'll get the newer program later.

Hmmm.. I have auto update on for the program, but avast has never forced a restart.  I just choose restart later.

I have mine set for 'ask when program updates are available'.
The program updates are released but to avoid excessive load on the servers the auto update check happens randomically every 7 days and it's not checking every time you connect to the Internet as with the iAVS checks. Every avast installation has a unique, randomly generated GUID ("general unique identifier") associated with it (it is generated during installation). This ID is random, but fixed.
