but it sounds like "use this software only on clean computers free of viruses". In my opinion antyviruses should be not only for defense but for fight too Smiley
That is neither what I said or meant. When many first install avast it detects and eliminates viruses that have gone un-noticed by their previous AV (as was the case for me).
Progressively over time, with the resident scanners, viruses that would normally get on to your system are detected and stopped from getting on your hard drive. This in itself will mean less will be detected on on-demand scans, which should also reduce the requirement for safe mode scan/s as the virus is less likely to be in use.
