problems with automatic updates
« on: June 07, 2006, 04:48:35 PM »
Hi.

I have your Avast 4.7 - version 4.7.844, VPS 0623-0 - professional antivirus but when I boot my PC (winXP pro)
and the software is automatically looking for updates this is the warning message I always read:
"Informazioni sull'aggiornamento corrente:
Ultimo errore incontrato: Impossibilitato a connettermi
a download5.avast.com (70.86.43.210:80) non è attivo." (that is "info about current update:
last error encountered: impossible to connect to download5.avast.com (70.86.43.210:80)
it is not active)

The fact is that if I manually click on the right button of the software interface then I succeed in downloading the updates...
Where is the problem?

I tell you that I use ZoneAlarm firewall and I tried to configure the internet options as you suggest (LAN > server proxy > localhost or 127.0.0.1/port 12080)
but nothing different happened (now my configuration is as before > no server proxy selected)

I own a private IP address and when I connect to internet my provider NATS my IP and gives me a public, shared one.

I hope you can help me solving  this problem

Thanks in advance

Best Regards
Mr. Bogumil

Hi and welcome to the avast! User Forums,

Why not try a repair on avast? if that doesn't work uninstall reboot then reinstall. Please post back your results.

I assume that you have a direct Internet Connection ?
If so check out the Understanding avast4.ini file thread look for the AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds information.

You can edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini file, [InetWD] section, Add this line or edit the existing figure, setting it to wait 60 seconds before connection.
[InetWD]
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60

If that doesn't resolve it ensure that your firewall allows avast.setup internet access otherwise your update will fail.

Follow David's suggestion...

I had the same or very similar problem last month. I also use ZAP (Zone Alarm Pro) and after booting up my PC, avast would always fail trying to update.  Manual check for updates after that would also work for me. The problem was that when avast checked for updates, ZAP wasn't finished loading yet so avast couldn't get through.  After making the changes to 'always connected' and 'wait 60 seconds' my problem was fixed.

To read the thread, see here:

Hope this helps.

I've been having the exact same problem except I'm using Kerio Firewall. (This problem just recently started last week, and I have never had this problem before) I added the 60 second delay and now get the error message 60 seconds later.  What should I do?

I'll try and I'll tell you if your precious suggestion works as I hope

@ testy
Are you saying you were getting this error shortly after boot or that you are simply getting the error downloading message ?
Please do as bogumil did and give the full error message.

Have you checked avast.setup has internet access ?

I rechecked my ini entry and may have done it incorrectly.  I redid it and everything seems to be fine so far.  For the record, here is the error message I was getting

Information about current update:

Last encountered error.  The system cannot find the file specified.

Hopefully that has resolved your problem, but the can't find the file doesn't seem to be something that the correction would resolve.

If you have the problem again (can't find the file) then try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

David,

That was the same error I was getting last month that was corrected by making the changes suggested here ('always connected' and 'wait 60 seconds').

Quote
I've been getting an error more than half the time when avast tries to update its virus data base after I turn on my PC. This problem started after the update two weeks ago to version 4.7.827.  After the red pop-up error box, I click on details. In the red box I read, "Could not find file specified"  (I DO NOT get a 'server error') I get 'specified file not found'.  After the error, I try to manually update and it updates perfectly.

...from this thread:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=21111.msg176634#msg176634

Hopefully 'testy's' problem will be corrected.

That is weird as the correction to AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60 isn't pointing at a file.

I did as you suggested, but I still obtain the same error message...What can I do now?

Ensure that your firewall allows access to avast.setup.

If there is an entry there for avast.setup and it is allowed, delete the entry ZA on occasion seems to forget. Now do a manual update, this should force ZA to ask permission again, allow access for avast.setup.
