Why won't avast scan these files?
« on: June 18, 2006, 11:26:47 PM »
I have several files that avast won't scan.  About 1 dozen of them are lavasoft\adwareSEpersonalskins\...\bt51.bmp is an example of one of them with the number after bt changing with each file
And I also have a file with the following name that avast will not scan:
winzip90.exe\setup.WZ\winzip32.EX_
Why won't Avast scan this and should I be concerned.

I have 4.7 version with Windows xp operating system.

Side note we had roadrunner installed over a week ago 4 days after internet explorer couldn't find our server haven't been able to access the internet since.  It has been determined that our modem is working find etc.  Right now I am using our sons laptop with our dial up connection.

This is normal... passworded files (either by the user or by the manufacture of the product) cannot be scanned.
I won't worry about these files... If you search the board you'll find a lot of info about 'missed' passworded files while scanning  8)
These files are safe, just avast does not use brute force to 'open' them and scan  8)

Get rid of the extra skins that you don't use in AdAware as these are password protected.

What error are you getting being unable to connect ?
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
