repeating error when updating

hello, I've received the following error a number of times over the past day or so. each time it comes with the red error dialog box,

the error is:
Event Type:   Warning
Event Source:   avast!
Event Category:   Client
Event ID:   90
Date:      6/22/2006
Time:      6:22:57 PM
User:      N/A
Computer:   UFOTOFU
Description:
Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x2000000C, dwRes is 2000000C. 

the other errors (same type, only time/date are changed) are located at http://jon_joy_1999.pastebin.com/726658
I'm on dialup and I am online when the errors occur.
In the dialog box that comes up when the errors happen it says
"Unable to find any update servers (0)
timeout 3 secs"
or something to that effect
any idea how to fix this?

Most probably your firewall are blocking avast.setup to connect and update.
Can you disable it? If this not work, can you uninstall it and see what you get?

Do you use a proxy filter?

Does avast.setup file is allowed to connect into your firewall?
Can you manually update program and vps?
Which are the versions of both of them?

Going by this it could also be that the servers.def file appears to be corrupt or 0KB, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def .
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

the exact error (I got it again, today) is
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Can't select any server for downloading (from 0).

Total time: 3 s

as for my firewall blocking, I have it set to allow Avast, and all of it's components, and to ask me if I want to allow or disallow any unknown components (there is no default disallow setting)
ashmaisv is set to
trusted; in: ASK. out: ASK. internet; in: ASK. out: PERMIT.
ashwebsv is set to
trusted; in: A. out: P. internet; in: A. out:P.
avast.setup is set to
trusted; in: A. out: A. internet; in: A. out: P.

I don't use a proxy server

program version is 4.7 build Jun2006 (4.7.844)
VPS is 0625-4

and I have no servers.def file. I have a servers.def.vpu file though
I placed that file into the appropriate folder, and just executed an update run and am waiting on the result. I'll update this as soon as that update is finished

EDIT: VPS is updated successfully with that new servers.def file

Yes that error tends to indicate a corrupt or missing servers.def file, now you have replaced it you shouldn't have a problem.

For some reason we seem to have a rash of these errors indicating a corrupt servers.def file.
