Is there a super bright user who can tell me the cause and how to fix it (apart from changing my AV to something else, which doesn't appeal)

Did you remove previous used AV using vendors removal tool?

Have you tried avast repair?

Yes, it was running fine until a few weeks ago (I only just noticed I could not start from the tray icon, so not sure when it died) .. not sure what changed. Repair makes no difference, nor does complete removal and re-install .. same deal, the UI will pop up for 2 seconds or so and then close. Most times there is not anything in the event log, it just vanishes. Sometimes I get a windows error message, but rarely.

Hi GSV3Miac,
most crashes which I found were related to datascan feature.
Can you try to disable it for a while ?
