No updates?
« on: May 07, 2018, 05:57:42 PM »
So I still have SafeZone Browser 4.58.2552.909 (as part of Avast Pro Anti-Virus) and when I try to do an update, it gives me the following message: "An error occurred while checking for updates."

Apparently, SZ was supposed to have been updated to the new Secure Browser a while ago, but it doesn't seem capable of doing it for whatever reason. How do I fix this? There has to be someway to get SZ to update properly and become Avast Secure Browser.

Oh, and I don't want to download the new browser separately. I want it as part of the Avast Pro Anti-Virus suite I currently have a subscription to, so please don't post a link directing me to the download page.

Just a FYI.  Running AIS and Avast Secure Browser is not a part of the suite, but I still have it installed and it is still usable.

For this to become a feature in your Avast Pro version, would mean the devs would have to insert it into your program.  They haven't done so with AIS so far.

It is at present only available as a separate download.

If it's only available as a separate download, why did Avast claim that SafeZone would be automatically upgraded to the new Secure Browser?

This message was posted by Will465 (a moderator here) on April 4: "We’re excited to announce that we are rolling out this as an automatic update to anyone who already has SafeZone installed over the coming weeks - there is no need for you to take any action."

That very clear says "it'll automatically upgrade" and makes no mention whatsoever about needing to download it as a completely separate program.

They didn't post a date for that "automatic update." My statement was :It is at present only available as a separate download.

So... when they posted "over the coming weeks" they were actually using weasel words, is that it?

I guess that depends on your interpretation  It certainly isn't mine.

I suppose it doesn't really matter what we call it as that won't change the situation.

The fact is Avast mission is to protect your system(s) against all threats.

It is, imo, the best a/v available, and certainly the best free a/v available.

Whether a certain feature is incorporated into a paid program is up to Avast, as you have said you want to have.  How they go about releasing a feature short of rebuilding a program is moot if it works as it should.

Design programming is always a work in progress and what was said or published yesterday may or may not hold true today, due to complexity and design priorities.  Things always change in the malware landscape.

You have the feature, use it.

You're missing the point. If you make a statement that something is going to happen, you bust your ass to make sure it happens. If the task simply can't be done within the time frame allotted, then you apologize and update your consumers on the issue.

You don't leave the old, out-dated and incorrect information up. That leads to confusion, anger, and lots of wasted time trying to explain to consumers why whatever was promised hasn't happened or isn't working properly.

You are again mixing oranges and Apples. You were told that you had a dangerous extension and that it would be dealt with.
Removing it, was dealing with it. It may not have been what you wanted but, you agreed to have it dealt with.

No, you are missing the point here.  From where you sit, you can say what you want.
  • Secure browser works, just not the way you want.
  • You want Avast to put in Secure Browser inside Avast Pro as they did before with Avast SafeZone Browser.  Not likely to happen, but you never know.
  • You were given a way to update from SafeZone Browser but apparently this update to Secure Browser was not in the way you wanted or expected.
Uberevangelists and Evangelists are users of avast just like you.  If a user has Avast Team Member under their name, then they are actual members of avast.  bob3160 and I are just trying to help you with your issues.  Nothing more, nothing less.

If you own a software, then you can change it to what you like.  But that would require programming powers, which neither bob3160 or I [are] allowed to do.  We only volunteer our time to help here.

All I'm looking for is for Avast to keep their word. They publicly and officially posted a statement about how this would be upgraded automatically. That didn't happen and because it didn't happen, an explanation is required on Avast's part.

Bottom line: You say something, you do it. No ifs, ands, or buts. End of story. Anything less is unacceptable and not a company I'd wish to do business with (which is what I'm doing when I purchase a subscription for their product).
