Something is very wrong with your installation.
Did you install the program from an administrator account? Did you restart the computer afterwards?

Hmm.
I just formatted.
So i'm logged in the account i created with the installation.
I only rebooted my computer once, after installing some of my drivers.
I'll go try rebooting it now.

CBM, why don't you follow:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html)
4. Boot
5. Install again by this command on the folder you've donwload and save the install file: setupeng.exe /forceinstall
Where setupeng.exe is the name of the executable

Tech,

I'm wondering if your fix worked. I'm trying to install Avast and getting the msvcp71.dll missing error message also.

I read here that perhaps KB900485, KB913433 or KB913580 may be causing the problem.

Please say it ain't so. Every guide for reinstalling xp says the first thing you should do afer reinstalling the OS is make sure Windows firewall is on and update so that's what I did.

It took almost 3 hours to reinstall xp, update it and get to the point where I'm ready to install Avast and I don't want to have to do it again.

Has anyone tried installing xp then installing avast and then windows update?

Are the files in your computer or not?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSVCP71.dll

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\msvcr71.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\URTTemp\msvcr71.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSVCR71.dll

I read here that perhaps KB900485, KB913433 or KB913580 may be causing the problem.
Well, I have these Windows updates and avast works... Spiritsong is the one that, sometimes, relate Windows Updates troubles... I'm not sure.

Has anyone tried installing xp then installing avast and then windows update?
In fact, when I install, I first go to Windows Update just with XP SP2 firewall and update Windows.
Then I start to install avast and a third party firewall.

Maybe we can send the dll to you and you just copy on the destination folder...

No, I don't have either one of those files.

I don't understand why I suddenly need them now. I reinstalled xp on the same computer using the same xp install cd and didn't have this problem before.

I reinstalled again & checked for the file before & after getting any windows updates and couldn't find it either time.

Never had .NET framework installed before either.

I wonder what changed?

Saw another thread where someone had obtained the files and that just seemed to get them different error message. Resolution of that one wasn't made clear either (or it could be I'm just too dumb to understand).

appreciate the help,
hayduke

I went back to microsoft update , installed .NET Framework 1.1 and the install ran without a problem.

And so everyone will know the only error I was getting was that msvcp71.dll was missing.

Appreciate everyone's time & help.

You didn't have to have .NET Framework... Anyway, sorry, it won't solve the problem.

Which is your Windows language? and avast language?

I'm wondering what is preventing these files to be installed.
Sorry if already answered, but, are you using an account with administrator rights? Is it the only one in your computer or there are more than one?
