lake quill new zealandimage, phishing attack?
« on: November 06, 2018, 06:40:09 PM »
about a month ago i turned on my computer and an image of lake quill, new zealand, appeared instead of my normal logon screen. as i recall, i pressed enter, and a message box with a password entry field appeared telling me that my account needed to be re-set. i booted my computer instead, and it went away

i turned on my computer this morning and the image appeared again:

i put the computer to sleep, and when i woke it up again, my computer password entry field with my microsoft account image was superimposed over the lake. i turned the computer off, and when i re-started it this error message appeared:

i turned the computer off again, and it started normally and appears to be running normally.

what is this?

See step #2  here  https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=194892.0

Attach the two diagnostic logs from FRST, then maybe @Sass Drake can see something

thank you for such a prompt reply.

added:

searching the net, this appears to be a microsoft error rather than a phishing attempt:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-security/user-profile-service-service-failed-to-sign-in-on/9ffb110a-e7c0-4618-ba22-df477303d3fa

apparently it results in people being locked out of their profile, which has not happened to me.
