Problem with Download server
« on: August 09, 2006, 06:59:48 AM »
Hi all,

A while ago I started having problems with Avast!. It said it had problems downloading updates and virus libraries.
I have included a error message it always give me (is in Dutch though...).  There is another one that pops up, but the message is about the same: Problem finding a server.

I have no other troubles with my PC or with my Internet connection. I use Windows XP, Browser is Firefox should that matter.

Thanks in advance,
Hicham

Hicham, do you use a firewall?
When this error occur, just after logon or at every time you try to update?

Hi Tech, it is the corrupt servers.def file, the "download server selecteren (van 0)" in the image is the old download server selection (from 0) issue and Alan has given the link to correct this.

Thanks for the quick response here. This sure is a lively forum, for such a technical thing;)

I followed the link Alan gave me. There somebody says to download the server files( servers.def), but when I follow the link I just get a list of servers, but nothing downloadable. When I tried finding the necessary file, I got lost in the catacombs of the avast website.

Can somebody show me where to find this?
Thanks!

You can download servers.def from here: http://download1.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def
Save it to C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder
Start the update again.

Right click on the link to the servers.def file above and select 'Save As' or 'Save Link As' depending on your browser to save the file to your hard disk, don't try to open the file by double clicking it or you will just see a list of servers ;D.

Once saved to your hard disk copy it to the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\setup folder, this will replace the original one (you should be asked for confirmation, do you want to replace this file, or words to that effect, answer Yes).

Thanks Tech & David,

I did get confused when I double clicked on the link there, so DavidR expanation for dummies helped me out.

What causes this problem to happen? Just in case, so I know if I can do something about it should it happen again.

Glad that we could help, welcome to the forums.

Computers are fickle things, if something happens (power, connection drop out or an error during this update, etc.) during the update of the servers.def file it could become corrupt, replacement is the easiest thing.
