Unable to import bookmarks
« on: February 04, 2020, 08:56:44 AM »
I used the 'Import bookmarks now' facility to import my bookmarks from Microsoft EDGE. It appeared to import them, I clicked 'Done' but no bookmarks show on the bookmarks bar or in the 'other bookmarks' folder.  Any suggestions?

This was fixed in the latest beta.

Hello steve_t7,

I am sorry for your troubles. I have checked our status about importing bookmarks from other browsers and sadly Microsoft Edge is not working at the moment.

However you can use this work around to import your bookmarks

  • In Edge go to browser menu (3 dots in upright corner), select Settings, scroll down and find ‘Transfer favorites and other info’, click on Import or Export, find Export your favorites to file and export your favorites to file on your disk.
  • In Avast Secure browser open import dialog. Visit secure://settings/importData or you can go to menu (3 dots in upright corner), Bookmarks, Import bookmarks and settings.
  • In a 'From' dialog select 'Bookmarks HTML file' and then click on Choose file and open a file that you created in step 1

Your bookmarks that were on a bar will be now on a toolbar in a folder called 'Favorites Bar'. To move them to the bookmark bar

  • Open Bookmarks manager (secure://bookmarks/ or ctr + shift + o)
  • In a left menu, switch to the 'Favorites Bar' folder
  • Select all bookmarks and folder you want to move (ctrl + a, to select all. Ctrl + left mouse click, to select/deselect individual files folders)
  • Cut your selection (ctrl + x)
  • In a left menu, switch back to the 'Bookmarks Bar' folder
  • Paste your selection (ctrl + v)

Hope it is clear and will help you. Let us know if you need some more assistance. I can for example create you a video tutorial.

Hi Hans180,

Valid concern. I assure you that your trust is something we do not take for granted and are continually doing our best to earn it.

I understand that seeing something not work may raise your concern. However, this particular issue is implying bad user experience not security risk. It is caused because Microsoft recently released new version of Microsoft Edge which opposite to older versions is now built on Chromium and we did not implement the new logic for import yet. I will check with the team what is the status of this task and if we can prioritize it.

To answer your question. To ensure safe browser is really safe our team is monitoring all the threats that are out there and is fixing all discovered vulnerabilities and is proactively developing new security features with upmost priority. If you have any other concerns why you do not trust our browser please let us know, we would like to hear why.

Btw, I tested imports from Chrome and Firefox and both worked as expected. Let us know if you experience any troubles with those and also please share a diagnostic information (secure://settings/diagnosticInfo) and version of the other browser so we can investigate it.
