Is it registered with Avast or has it expired?
The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.

What is your OS?
It sounds like you are running an NT system with a restricted user rights...  didn't you change the user rights recently? Or are you logged as an administrator?

Indeed if you have multiple users accounts on your system, you should login as "administrator"  ;)

Strange, the service should have enough rights. Can you check if 'avast! iAVS4 Control Service' is 'Started'?

Path should point to: X:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (depends where you installed avast!)
