Avast silently blocking websites.
« on: December 31, 2020, 02:44:44 AM »
Ok, I'm getting a bit frustrated... Really hoping someone can help. Avast is somehow blocking access to certain websites. I ave the free version, and I don't have the browser app installed, so I don't even understand how it has the permissions to do it. I don't have an "Avast blocked this" notification or anything like that. I just get an "ERR_CONNECTION_RESET" page when I try to load things. It took me several days to figure out it was Avast, but sure enough, disabling the antivirus fixes the issue. And I'm not talking about scary websites. It has blocked pages like the contractor website for the guys remodeling my basement, my online banking login page, and tonight it blocked the bloody IRS. Not even joking, Avast blocked the irs.gov website... I have had to repeatedly disable my antivirus. Some of them seem to resolve on their own (my online banking came back after a few days), but others do not (2 weeks later I still can't access my contactor's website without disabling Avast). I can't find any pattern or connection, I can't find any setting to stop Avast from policing my websites, and I'm really not sure what to do... Help?

You have something else going on here - Avast doesn't silently block - it would alert if there is a detection.  A screenshot of the error message may provide more information (though I'm not confident).

I have just visited the irs.gov site you mention and even being in the UK I have no problem connection.

What Avast program and version are you running ?
What is your OS and Firewall ?

Are you running any other security based software, if so what ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Avast ver. 20.10.2442
Virus Definition updated today ver. 201230-4
Windows 10 Pro
I just use the Windows firewall. No other security software.

And you're right, I did some digging and I had hidden notifications. Apparently, everything was "infected with URL:Phishing."

It doesn't have a notification for blocking the irs website earlier tonight, and that appears to be fixed (I'm guessing that has something to do with my virus definitions being updated less than an hour ago?

This is the page I see when Avast decides to block a website for "Phishing" reasons.

Hi,

If you think the detection is incorrect, then you can report the detection (URL) as a false positive. https://www.avast.com/false-positive-file-form.php
