anybody heard of lasse.exe?
« on: November 09, 2006, 01:53:33 AM »
I have this program trying to launch every time I boot
It always fails to launch, when I looked it up on the internet it says it's malware.
I scanned it with Avast without any effect.
Has anybody heard of  this lasse.exe?
Can I delete it manually?

It should be lsass.exe the misspelling is an indication of malware trying to trick you into thinking it is a system file.

A google search fot it returns some hits relating to malware, this is just one, http://virusinfo.prevx.com/pxparall.asp?PXC=70f049984843. Also see http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/359561-lasse-exe-system-error.html.

As you can see it isn't as simple as deleting the file, this infection is also an indication that your OS is out of date and needs an urgent visit to windows update.

Thanks,
I know I need to update my OS, but...  :'(
If I install the prevx antivirus to eradicate it, will there be no conflict with avast?

Thanks for images
But I turned it off a long time ago to get rid of some virus, and now the tab has disappeared. I have to do something in the registry to get it back I think

If it is disabled then it shouldn't be a problem, just check the c:\system volume information folder, it should be empty if it is disabled. This assumes you have winXP.

Yes I deleted both Lasse.exe and Winime and they were still gone when I turned the pc back on this morning so I assume I got rid of them...

Anyway, I suggest that you disable System Restore, clean your temporary files, schedule a boot time scanning with avast, boot, enable System Restore again.
Besides, you can use a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware, SUPERantispyware or Spyware Terminator to be sure you're clean.  :)
