Can't Open E-mail Attachments
« on: January 28, 2004, 11:26:00 PM »
All attachments in my Outlook Express are marked as unsafe and I can't open any of them. In addition to Avast, I have Spampal and Sygate Firewall, so I'm not sure which program is performing this action.
I downloaded Zonealarm twice, but on both occasions I couldn't open to set up.
Greatful for any help.
Thanks,
dgkiwi.

Would you please open up OE, then go into Tools/Options/Security and see if the box is checked next to "Do not allow email attachments to open........"
If it is, uncheck it.  Close out all screens by clicking Apply and/or OK, and try to open the email again.

You wouldn't.  Both Sygate and Zone Alarm run resident.  Never, never try to have two firewalls running together.

The program that is causing your problem seems to be Outlook Express itself.

Let me know how it turns out.

Techie, you're a genius. Your advise on Outlook Express and Zone Alarm, was spot on.
I unchecked the attachments tab you suggested, and I can now open all of them.
Also after deleting Sygate, I now have Zone Alarm up and Running. It's so great to have this huge pool of resources to draw from.
Thank you very much.

dg,

It is once again a pleasure to serve you Master......
Your wish is my command!   ;D

If you want to have a backup anti-virus, then use Kaspersky online.  I find it less invasive and troublesome than Panda.

Come back anytime.

Techie,
I don't know what Panda is, but you seem to think I have it.
Please explain.
Cheers,

dg,

Sorry about that.   Maybe this link will help.  Panda and Kaspersky offer free online virus scanning which some people opt for instead of having another anti-virus program sitting on their computer.
Note:  Never have two resident (running) av's on you system at any time!

Techie,
Thanks for all your help, I think I'll stick with what I've got as it seems to be working well, but I will keep your advise for future referense.
Thanks again.

dg,

I did not mean for you to use something other than Avast....
I meant for you to consider ALSO using an online scanner from time to time which is free.

Some users have a resident antivirus such as Avast, and another "manual scanning" antivirus which does not run resident.  This prevents the problem you had with Sygate and Avast.

A bit clearer now I hope.

Thanks Techie, but what's the advantage of having two scanners?
Cheers.

dg,

Sorry I did not get back to you right away, I have been away.

Some people feel more confortable having 2 of everything.

I only have Avast installed on my systems, but occasionally run an online scan if I suspect a virus that Avast is not showing.

Thus far, Avast has not missed any!!! ;D

Take Care
