I'll throw the towel... man, what's going on in your computer?
Is there any other security application running? Did you block access to anything *download.avast* into your browser settings?
Are you using PeerGuardian or any other IP blocker?
I suppose you've downloaded the avast setup from its website...
Can you check the folder access permitions? (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\)  ::)

Hope someone from Alwil team discover this mistery  ::)

Thanks for all your help Tech. Nothing is blocked, don't use an IP blocker. Nothing has changed on my PC, apart from having to reregister avast home, and this problem arose.

Try to change the logon account for avast updates to administrator account.
In services control panel display properties of avast! iAVS4 Control Service, switch to LogOn page, and enter administrator account and password. Restart service to take effect on changes.
You can try setting avast! Antivirus service logon too.

Hi Mark99

I tried everything, but Forejt's last idea:

Try to change the logon account for avast updates to administrator account.
In services control panel display properties of avast! iAVS4 Control Service, switch to LogOn page, and enter administrator account and password. Restart service to take effect on changes.
You can try setting avast! Antivirus service logon too.

I hadn't tried this as I had already uninstalled avast and had gone with another AV. However, I would be interested to see if this works, as I think that avast is a superior AV.
