Should I use the ashQuick.exe program to scan received files?

It should be scanned by the avast Instant Messaging shield automatically. To make sure it is, click the avast tray icon, select "Details", in the list on the left scroll to Instant Messaging and watch the Last Scanned File field - it should reflect your downloads.

BTW what OS are you using?
