How to disable the program, in order to install some program which requires disabling of antivirus software, e.g., display drivers, etc??

Why should the display driver installer require disabling the antivirus protection?

Anyway, you can try to click the blue avast! icon and select "Stop On-access Protection and Exit".

I tried the system tray stop and exit....it doesn't work.
Can any body come up with another way of stopping and exiting the program?
Thanks

If you're just trying to disable the virus scanning, the advice you got from Igor should do the trick.

If you want to completely remove the program from memory (including e.g. the auto-update manager etc.) go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and stop the "Avast antivirus" service (this assumes you're using Windows NT/2000/XP)
