We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- What was the filename and path where the virus was found?
- Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
The best things in life are free.

Is there a Red circle and bar over the avast icon ?
If so check these:
AVAST FAQ - Red Circle on avast icon. http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-avast-4-home-professional.html
AAVM subsytem detected and RPC error. http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-other-questions.html#idt_1539

Are you getting any errors, if so what are they ?

Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

u can start the provider by opening the on-access scanner and click the button "start" at each provider..if ure not able as u state, open the "add/remove program" and click to unistall avast..when the installation wizard opens, select the option "change" and be sure to install all the providers and if that doesn't fiz it either,do a "repair"(its an option from the avast installation wizard)..i think that pne of these will solve ur solution otherwise hang on and an evangelist will reply ur topic soon ;) welcome to the forums :D
