Stubborn adware!
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:10:23 PM »
Hi all,

I have adware on my computer that keeps giving me pop-ups every few minutes. I have tried sypbot, Ad-Aware SE Personal and obviously Avast! which is usually my first port of call.

I was confident I could get rid of it but it just won't go away. I haven't run a boot-time scan though. Please help. ???

What are the pop-ups for? Any particular company or service?

If you post a HijackThis! log, that might give us a clue:

Hi FwF. The pop-ups are for all sorts of random stuff. From'debt-solution' to gambling sites. I like the irony there!

Heres the HJT log.

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

1) Enable/Disable System restore on Windows ME or Windows XP. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it's not available in Windows 2k.

2) Clean your temporary files. You can use the Windows Advanced Care features for that.

3) Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting).

4) It will be good if you download, install, update and run other trojan remover tools: a-squared, Free AVG Antispyware or  SUPERantispyware (trojan removers). Some users recommend Spyware Terminator.

5) Use the immunization of Windows Advanced Care features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

First disable. It will delete all restore points (with the infected files).
Then run the other scans and at the end, after all, enable again.

Thanx Tech. I'll follow the steps you outlined above and post here when I'm done.

These entries are unknown. Do you recognise the applications?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [chin eggs site that] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MfcdLongChinEggs\Deadsave.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bias htm] C:\DOCUME~1\Siddiqi\APPLIC~1\KINDMP~1\Meta Grid Ace.exe

If you can find the files, submit them to VirusTotal and see if they are malware:

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

(You may need to enable 'View hidden files and folders' and disable 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.

This entry is suspicious. Do you recognise the entry? If not, I recommend fixing it with HijackThis!

The pop-ip program may be hidden by a rootkit. Try a few rootkit scans and see if anything suspicious turns up. (Remember that legitimate programs can also hide processes so check on Google or ask here before deleting anything).
