xterm\firedaemon

Since last update Avast has identified several files in a SYTEM32\xterm folder as infected.  Looking at the last changed date for the files I guess it could be false positive.  Finding conflicting information about these files from google.  Anyone know anything about them?

Didn't light up as the result of a scan, so these files must have been active.

I assume there weren't multiple copies of firedaemon.exe and the others, so why there are multiple copies in the chest is strange.

Did you install firedaemon ?

Unless this keeps coming back, the transfer times are different so they may be being regenerated, are you getting multiple detections ?

You could also check the offending/suspect file at: VirusTotal - Multi engine on-line virus scanner Or Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner if any other scanners here detect them it is less likely to be a false positive. You can't do this with the file in the chest, you will need to move it out.

I was confused by the fact that it was picked up multiple times.  I'll move it out and scan it online.

This is getting wierder.  Moved the files out to a folder (Avast rang out again) and tried to upload them to both scanners.   

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file .......from Jotti.  The other one uploads and scans a file of 0 bytes and obviously finds nothing. 

To check that It is not a firewall issue I successfully uploaded other files for scanning.  Any suggestions.  The files are there and do have size.

Just mounted an Acronis Image of my entire system from two weeks ago and the SYSTEM32\xterm folder and all of its contents didn't exist when that image was taken.  Guess it must really be a baddy.  I didn't install it intentionally, but my girlfriend uses this machine and is incompetent (I love her anyway ??? ;D).

Scanned that folder I created to hold the files temporarily with Avast and they were picked up again so I moved them back to the chest.  They really were there so something was stopping me uploading then to scanners.

I think I will hold on for a few days and keep checking google to see if anyone else gets the same problem... unless anyone has a better suggestion. 

At least I've got that image to restore to if the worst happens.  ;)

It goes on.  I remember about the same time Avast was hitting these files my firewall was asking me about C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnmger.exe  I allowed it access initially assuming it was legit, but eventually blocked it.  That's about when the other files stopped reappearing.  Hijackthis.de shows http://hijackthis.de as nasty and a few other things have crept into my log.  I'll post my clean log from late Jan and today's log for comparison in separate posts.

The C:\WINDOWS\Df34.exe is another unknown that has been trying to access the net but has been blocked by my firewall.

That looks like a culprit and there are possibly more. I personally don't think a comparison is that helpful not to mention it is somewhat difficult to do a side by side comparison. Best to get to a clean a state as possible and then post a log.

Schedule a boot-time scan, right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, Menu, 'Schedule boot-time scan...'

If you haven't already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
1. Ewido, a.k.a. avg anti-spyware If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME.
Whilst browsing or collecting email, etc. if you get infected then the malware by default inherits the same permissions that you have for your user account. So if the user account has administrator rights, the malware has administrator rights and can reap havoc. With limited rights the malware can't put files in the system folders, create registry entries, etc. This greatly reduces the potential harm that can be done by an undetected or first day virus, etc.

Check out the link to DropMyRights (in my signature below) - Browsing the Web and Reading E-mail Safely as an Administrator. This obviously applies to those NT based OSes that have administrator settings, winNT, win2k, winXP.

I did say you can't upload from the chest in my original post about using virustotal, etc. (that is a typo in my last post now edited) and when you try, the usual result is a file size of 0 bytes.

I did move the files out, Avast alerted but I took no action so the files did make in out of the chest.  I'll try them again.

Managed to upload Df34.exe to VirusTotal, mixed results attached, I'll send it to Avast for them to review.

Restored the 3 files to their original locations from the chest instead of to a different folder.  Managed to upload dll32.exe for scanning, results attached.  The other 2 uploaded as 0 bytes.
