VPS file was destroyed
« on: March 04, 2007, 01:56:00 PM »
Hi. This is my first ever problem with avast. I have 4.7 home on my old win98 machine. Two days ago I noticed my tray icon was missing. I think I tried to start avast manually but got an error message (which I can't remember now). After rebooting, the blue bubble is there but my resident protection is gone/disabled.

Under 'about avast', I find the virus database is gone. If I try a scan, the error box shows vps file was destroyed (42040). Is there a way to fix this problem?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

There have been a few people reporting some problems with win98 after an avast program update (been a while since the last one though).

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

Or you could try the avast! VPS Update - Manual Download, download and save the file, go off line and double click the file it should install a complete VPS file.

If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Thank you for your reply. I tried the repair and manual vps download but to no avail. I downloaded a new program as you suggested and will uninstall/reinstall. Let you know how it goes.
