Vista rip-off
« on: June 12, 2007, 12:02:59 AM »
I have a Vista rip-off for you!

I've been shopping for a new laptop. Most come with two 512mb RAM modules. For example HP/Compaq "strongly recommends" 2gb of RAM for Vista, but many of their laptops come with two 512mb RAM modules. That means we need to buy two 1gb modules!!! The two 512mb are wasted or should I say the money is wasted! On these laptops I'm talking about have a 2gb max RAM capability!

A class action lawsuit should be brought against the computer manufacturers, the retailers & Microsoft!

I think this is done to make extra money for the retailers. Microsoft should establish clear & realistic RAM requirements. This should include requirements on how much RAM is to be installed at the factory!

Well it is most likely that you can upgrade to 2GB when ordering the laptop, yes it would be costing more, but the 2x512MB sticks wouldn't have been bought and the money wasted.

What you need to look at the minimum specification for the version of Vista you want to run and if you are going to rum aero glass then video ram if shared would be a factor as that would be coming off the 2x512 sticks, further reducing what you have left. By all accounts 2GB is almost the minimum if you want to run other applications with many reporting 4GB being the ideal.

I think Vista is a rip-off period, it certainly is in the UK where it costs roughly twice the US price. It will be some considerable time before (if I ever do) I get Vista.

Vista will run with as little as 512 for memory.
This will not work if your using Vista Ultimate.

Unfortunately it's always been the consumers responsibility to shop wisely.

That's why I haven't bought a new laptop yet.  ;D

Problem with 'class action' idea is that Microsoft's official "recommended system requirements" is 1GB on all versions except Home Basic (AKA, the "Vista Ready" sticker lawsuit-avoiding version) which is very comfortable with 1GB. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx
Which Vista version do these HP/Compaq laptops have pre-installed?

I have a sugestion for you. Buy a laptop with XP installed(or buy a Mac !) and forget about Vista except if you wish to play DX10 games(then you have to go with Vista). DX 10 is the sole reason i will make the switch to Vista one of these days. Yep MS is forcing us gamers to go with Vista if we want to play DX 10 games. But if i weren't a gamer i would never ever buy Vista infact i believe i would switch to Linux in that case and get rid of MS once and for all.

Test before... a lot of users say that but can never be used to Linux. Seems the same as Windows but it is not the same... you'll remember that old-good Windows times from time to time while using Linux... 8)

Hello Brazil !  Or should i say uber avast! forum junkie. ;D

Well i have 2 pc's over here , i am running Win XP(sp2 of course) on one and Linux Mint 3.0 on the other. I have to say i started using the linux box more and more and i moved alot of my pc tasks from windows over to linux (like web browsing,e-mailing,movie watching, music listening, documents, torrent downloading, baking cd&dvd's etc. ) so mainly i only use the windows box for gaming, video/sound encoding/decoding and oh yeah running Photoshop but that's about all. So yeah i could live with only the Linux box no problem but it just happens i'm also into pc gaming so i have no choice but to use ms windows. But like i said if i weren't a gamer i would totally ditch ms and go with ONLY Linux. ;)

Cheers!
