I have the unbeatable virus...
« on: June 16, 2007, 12:11:30 AM »
I don't know if this is a trojan or what, but every time I get on the internet, I am greeted by several popups advertising bowflex, singles websites, tv shows, etc.  When I close out of them, they go away, only to be replaced by new ones several minutes later.  I've run avast, another virus program, an anti-spyware program, and an anti-adware program, and it's still here!
I guess I should be grateful it isn't advertising "adult" sites or bombarding me with hundreds of tiny windows, but it's still a big pain.  What should I do?

2. Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
3. Spybot Search and Destroy

Seems a browser hijacking...
Can you post a HijackThis Log?  It can be downloaded here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php

It's a free program that lists the programs running on your PC, those that start up automatically with Windows, installed browser toolbars and a variety of other key pieces of data that help identify if any malware programs are installed on your PC. Extract the program to its own folder (eg C:\hijackthis) making sure you don't run it from a temporary folder or from the desktop.  After extracting it, rename hijackthis.exe to hijackthat.exe and run it.  Click to scan a save a log, then post the contents of the log using more than one post if the log is very long.  Don't "fix" anything - just post the log. Interpreting a HijackThis log is an expert task.
The best things in life are free.

Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable. So you should choose which is going to be your resident on-access anti-virus and then uninstall AVG ;D

Ensure you have the latest version of JRE (JAVA Runtime Enviroment) because older versions can be vulnerable to malware. First remove All Older Versions From Add/Remove Programs.
Then get the latest update from here http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Have you run SuperAntiSpyware from safe mode ?

First your OS is well out of date at XP SP1, there are many vulnerabilities that are being exploited and security patches have been released to cure the vulnerability.

There doesn't appear to be a firewall active or you are using the XP firewall (or an unknown one).
Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

The Web Buying could be serving up lots of these pop-ups:
http://www.castlecops.com/s14807-WebBuying.html

These look suspect, google the file names of those that have file names, fix the others with no file names.

Virtumondo amongst others

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please include a new Hijackthis log as well

OK you must have removed the elements as noted by DavidR so that was an old infection.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Your log shows clean but it is obviously not.  I will look at the registry and new file elements that Combofix provides and see how to go from there, this is obviously a sneaky one

You still have the out of date JAVA version, I believe the current version of JAVA is 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_01) so unless there is a reason why you need an old version (you have an application that requires it) you should get the latest version which closed security exploits.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD - 27" external monitor 1440p 2560x1440 resolution - avast! free  24.9.6130 (build 24.9.9452.762) UI 1.0.818/ Firefox, uBlock Origin Lite, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Appropiate Sun Java Version

 :)  Hi Jane & DavidR :

Jane : You have an extremely outdated Java, which is a serious security
risk ; since you have Win XP SP1, you should uninstall ALL Sun Java
versions on your computer and go to :
      http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp and Select
"(JRE) 5.0 Update 12", then its "Download" button .

David : The Thread I started "Sun Java for 'Older' Operating Systems"
      at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28693.0  provides the
appropiate info for Jane's situation .

There is no Sun Java for older systems. The latest version will work on SP1, according to the specifications:

Platform(s):
Windows 2000 (SP4+), Windows XP (SP1 SP2), Windows 2003, Vista

The only reason to install version five is if you have software which is dependent on that version, as far as I can see.

 :)  Hi Frank ( & Others ) :

It appears Sun's inclusion of XP SP1 in their "Acceptable" OS's for the
JRE 6.0 Series has been done within the last couple of months; it was
NOT what was recommended by them in March/April of this year .
And the link you quoted is for OFFLINE Installation ONLY; I do not know
if those with XP SP1 can do a successful ONLINE Installation of the
      6.0 Series !?

And there DEFINITELY is a Sun Java for "Older" Operating Systems; that
      is WHAT my http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
      is all about .
