Eset Takes NOD32 Antivirus Scanner Online
« on: July 05, 2007, 11:09:52 PM »
Eset’s NOD32 antivirus application always ranks pretty high in comparison to other programs, and now there is some great news to come out of their site. They just released a beta version of an online antivirus scanner that requires no subscription and no software installation. With it you can scan your computer for viruses, malware, worms, Trojans, phishing, and spyware.
I tried it out, and the first thing that you should know is that it requires Internet Explorer since it uses an ActiveX control to do the scanning. When you go to run it the first time IE will download the 15MB file to install it, but despite the large download I was scanning my computer for viruses in well under a minute.
The whole process didn’t take too long, but you’ll notice that the scanner appears to freeze when working on a compressed file (ZIP, CAB, JAR, etc…). That’s because it is scanning the contents of that file for viruses, and when it is done scanning the file the number of files scanned will quickly jump to reflect the work it did.
The scanning process did take a little longer than I expected. The actual NOD32 program can scan my computer in roughly 20 minutes, but this took upwards of 50 minutes to complete. Of course it is just an ActiveX control so it won’t be as efficient as their standalone application.
So why is this such great news? It gives you another way to scan your computer for viruses without needing to install an additional program. I use Avast! to monitor for viruses and now once a week or so I can scan it with this online scanner for extra safety 8) ::) ;D

Two points: One, sounds like they are installing something otherwise why the 15MB download.

Two, I wouldn't contemplate a 15MB download on dial-up (about 1 hour) just for a virus scan even from eset.

Unlike David, I'm not worried about downloading a small 15 MB file.  ;D
Nice addition and find.   Thanks  :)
Even nicer is the fact that it needs IE.
Right now IE is busy scanning while I continue to browse using Firefox which is my default browser.  ;)

The 15mb download is for the activex contol.

I did a scan with NOD32's online scanner, I'm clean.

Avira users won't like it.  Over in Spyware Terminator's forums 90% or more use Avira av & Comodo fw.  They believe if you're using avast! & any other fw than Comodo you will be immediately infested & your computer compromised.  Comodo fw users in this forum think this way, also.  Maybe for peace of mind they should switch to Avira av. ;D

BitDefender Online scanner always confirms avast! does an excellent job on both of my computers.  I've tried Avira, it never found anything that avast! might have missed.  I don't want to use Avira if it can't find any of the junk avast! misses!  ;D ;D ;D  How much sleep should I lose from worry as I don't use Comodo fw?

My point is some go too far.  The only completely safe computer is one that isn't connected to the internet.  There is always the chance something can slip in.  I use BitDefender online scanner occasionally & now I'll use NOD32's online scanner also.  I use two on-demand anti-spyware/anti-trojan scanners as well as a real-time anti-spyware/anti-trojan.  I take reasonable care without going overboard.  I need to run light for the low RAM capability of my 'puters.

I did a scan with NOD32's online scanner... some false positives indeed...
I'll post later.

They believe if you're using avast! & any other fw than Comodo you will be immediately infested & your computer compromised.
Just adverstisement... there are others very good firewalls besides Comodo.

Comodo fw users in this forum think this way, also.
No. There are other firewalls, there are other antivirus.

Maybe for peace of mind they should switch to Avira av. ;D
I won't do that... won't worth for me 8)

How much sleep should I lose from worry as I don't use Comodo fw?
Which is your firewall?

avast! must be doing it's job because NOD32's online scanner didn't find anything. :) ;D :)
Or, I'm infected with something neither of them can find.  ;D
Unlike rdmaloyjr, I've finally switched over to Comodo Firewall.

It's a pity that rdmaloyjr can't get Comodo installed after all... you're loosing an excellent firewall.

Tech,

I'm sorry, I forgot to ask your permission before downloading a firewall.  It wont happen again.  I'll ask before downloading anything again.

May I please use a firewall of my choice?

drhayden1,

Apologies to you, also.

May I have your permission to use a firewall of my choice?

 ;D ;D ;D
