Cannot Turn Resident Protection Back On.
« on: July 22, 2007, 06:03:58 AM »
I have Avast Professional and somehow my Resident protection is off but when I click "Start On-Access Protection", nothing happens.

When I press the Start button in the "On-Access Scanner" window, it comes up with this message: "The requested resident task was not found. The operation could not be completed."

So, it could have been something my mom did because she was on my comp right before this happened, but odds are she will deny it or say she doesn't know how to fix it, lol. Anyways....help?

ry a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

What was the missing file ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Are the avast icons in the system tray, 'a' and 'i' ?
I more concerned with the 'a' icon, and does it have a red circle over it ?
What avast processes are running in the Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw ?

I am very sorry for not replying. I thought I had set the replies to notify me by email but apparently it was not set-up to do so.

I did the repair option but to no avail.

I do not know of a missing file. When I click start for any of the options it says the same message.

I don't believe I installed another anti-virus software. I bought this one for that reason specifically.

The icon is an "a" with a red circle with a slash through it. I know this means that the protection has been stopped, which it obviously has since it won't start up again.

There is an aswUpdSv.eve, ashServ.exe, and an ashDisp.exe in my Task manager window.

Just hoping it may have said which file was missing, though if one was missing I would have hoped that the repair (were you on-line at the time ?) would have recovered it.

Your installation would appear compromised as indicated by the Red circle with bar over the avast icon and two of the avast providers aren't running ashMaiSv.exe and ashWebSv.exe, the email scanner and the web shield.

Red Circle on avast icon - AAVM subsytem detected and RPC error. http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-other-questions.html#idt_1539
Check out this FAQ entry and see if that works.

It may however be better to do a clean reinstall. Before you uninstall ensure that you have your Pro license available, the one that was emailed to you.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.

I was online at the time and I never got that RPC error before.

I guess I'll have to reinstall it then. Thanks for your help! ;D

Why won't it accept it, what error message ?

You can contact sales @ avast.com without the spaces. Give them the background info about the problem when you purchased the license, what email address you used, etc. Possibly a link to this topic.

It says that the parameter is incorrect. I'll try that. Thanks.

The most common problem when using copy and paste, is copying a blank space at the end of the key. Try it again.

edit

I've found highlighting it from right to left eliminates the possiblity of getting a space at the end.

It still didn't work when I tried your method. Avast just doesn't like me. I did have to unistall this before, maybe it won't take the same license key more than two times.

If the license key is still valid and hasn't expired (one year, check the receipt date of your email) it shouldn't have any restriction on the number of times you uninstall and reinstall.

An Avast sales person sent me the right license key. Oddly enough, it was completely different than the one I was using before  ???. Anyways, thank you so much for all your help!
