Sound Problem
« on: August 10, 2007, 10:28:01 PM »
I have Vista and avast 4.7.1001 and anytime I move my mouse over a button on the simple user interface I hear a ding sound. In my sound settings under avast antivirus I have the sound set to none. When I had XP sp2 I never had this problem. Anyone know what the problem is?

I have no idea what the problem might be but the latest version of avast is 4.7.1029 so I would suggest you do a manual program update, before doing any fault finding.

What skin are you using for the Simple User Interface ?
Is this the same if you try a different skin ?

Strange... I've never experienced this on Vista... I suppose you're not talking about the L-CARS skin...

On RejZoR-Sharp I don't get a ding but a muted sort of click sound when I hover on the buttons.

This is the same as I get on a number of skins, aVist by SCZ, Silhoette_4in1, Maclover, so it would appear that is on a lot of the skins. But I rarely hear it as I don't have my volume full on and I only use the speakers on my monitor.

When I check the 'Disable avast! sounds, they are completely muted, on winXP Pro.

I don't want to turn off all my sounds on avast just on the move over simple user interface button. But when I set it to none I still get a beeping sound now. When I set it to none I should not be hearing any sounds. I'm using RejZor-Sharp skin, avast 4.7.1001, windows vista.

The only reason I mentioned the disabling of sound was to show that when I did that I got no sound but that this doesn't work for you is a mystery.

I don't believe there is a way to just disable sounds on the simple user interface as these actions (sound on hover, etc.) are embedded in the skin. I believe you could remove or rename (better) the offending .wav file so the action wouldn't work, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ENGLISH\hover.wav is I think the file.

I don't know if avast would recognise this file was missing and try to replace it or not. That however, still leaves you with why the disable sounds doesn't work for you in vista, perhaps a permissions issue, I don't know I don't use Vista.

This might be an event that is fired in Vista when you move over the button.  Look in your sound control panel and find the one you hear.  Then set just that one to none to find out if it is a certain Vista event that is causing it.

I can't find this sound in sound control panel anywhere. The sound is the same no matter what skin I use. I have used four different skins and get the exact same sound on each one of them. It is set to none for all of these but that setting is not working. I don't know what the problem is.

Is the sound that you hear one of the WAV files located in the <avast>\English folder?

No it's not in the <avast>\English folder. I don't know where it's coming from.

Do you hear the same sound with the default skin ("Silver Panel")?

Some skins come with their own sounds, and I believe these cannot be surpressed.

You do?
Then I guess it really SHOULD be one of the WAV's in the Avast folder... :)

Isn't it e.g. hover.wav?

Cheers

It was set at hover and then I set it to none because I just didn't want any sound for that certain action. And then this sound that I have now took over. But if I set it to none I should not be hearing any sound at all right?
