Win32:agent-LTS(trj)
« on: October 03, 2007, 08:15:21 PM »
I, too, am having a problem with this trojan. I am using Windows XP. I've tried a lot of things to remove it, including online scans like BitDefender, and while all of these programs identify the issue, none have fixed it; they only remove some of the associated files, not the root of the problem itself. Avast! notifies me and asks me what to do, but the thing keeps regenerating because it's not all being deleted. In addition to trying to get rid of it manually I've also tried Rootkit cleaners and CCleaner, among other programs, with no results. I have disabled my restore point and will try once more tonight to get rid of the pesky thing, but I am rapidly coming to my wit's end (been fiddling with this for the last 10 hours). If I don't get this cleaned out tomorrow morning I will post an HJT file.

 :)  Hi :

A HijackThis scan run in "Safe Mode" is of very little value, since there is
an abbreviated list of "Running Processes" . I assume you ran a "Complete
System Scan" of AVG AntiSpyware and it did NOT help !?
Rather than using the latest version of Ad-aware, I recommend you
install the FREE ver of "SUPERantiSpyware" from
www.superantispyware.com and run its "Perform Complete Scan" .
I see you also have Spybot !? It found nothing as well ?
Popcaploader games can contain trojans; I had the same "Insaniquarium"
Game once that had a trojan inside ; IF you still have that game on your
computer, I recommend you uninstall it .

Oops on that safe mode log. Will be appending a new log to this thread, as it exceeds post length. And, yes, I've run the complete AVG scan. Nothing from Spybot as well. I did delete all PopCap Games from my PC. I'm going to try running both again now.

Hi Adacatcher,

You have a extremely nasty one here:
O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {88418AA3-16F5-4FC2-A9D8-90B1266DF841} - C:\WINDOWS\nsduo.dll

The filename is associated with the malware group Generic.Dropper.xCodec.

These files have no vendor, product or version information specified in the file header.

NSDUO.DLL has been seen to perform the following behavior(s):

    * Creation and Registration of a Browser Helper Object in Internet Explorer
    * Registers a Dynamic Link Libray (DLL) File
    * Enables an In Process Object/Server - Common with DLL Injections
* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

    * Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    * This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    * Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
    * Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
    * Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    * Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    * Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    * Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    * When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    * If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    * After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    * Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    * Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    * Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    * After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Hi Adacatcher,

After DrWeb CureIT!, run this tool:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

Follow the instructions on the page carefully.

These scanners are also good if you haven't tried them.

AVG Anti-Spyware Free (Requires Win2k/XP)
Ad-Aware Free
Spybot Search & Destroy
SUPERAntiSpyware Free

Post a fresh log when you're done so we can confirm you're clean.

 :)  Hi Adacatcher :

Your "new" Normal Mode Scan shows a "Running Process" of an "old" version of
Sun Java, namely "JRE 1.5.0_05"( as well as the "newer" JRE 1.6.0_02 ) ; should
ONLY have the latest version of Sun Java on a computer and ALL "old" versions
     should be uninstalled .
Just happens that Sun Java released a new version today, so ALL versions
should be uninstalled, then go to www.java.com to get the latest .

I am currently doing a few things on the PC to combat this; in the meanwhile, I would like to discuss something I've heard about Smitfraudfix. I found out from Spybot that it actually injects additional hijackers into your system, in order to scare users into DLing other software. I heard this also at techpost. Anyone else?

It came up on my Spybot - Search & Destroy scan, as well as on the Techspot (if I remember correctly) forums. I tried to poke around over there and see if I could come up with the thread, but only found something about The Shield. I tried to find some log files from Spybot or something to post here, but did not succeed. Let's see if I can explain it:

While running Spybot this morning a Smitfraud file was selected to be repaired, and when I expanded the pane to the right to read the description of the threat I got a whole long couple of paragraphs about how it hijacks the desktop background and the like.

As far as virus removal goes, I am scanning and DLing away, and we'll see what happens. I will post another HJT log when I'm done.

Thanks again, all.

Smitfraud is a Trojan rightly detected by Spybot.

SmitfraudFix is a tool to remove that Trojan.

SmitfraudFix may be more effective at removing the Trojan as it is specially designed to remove it, so give it a try.

Hi Adacatcher,

Your remark about SmitfraudFix was genuine (correction should be Combofix). There certainly were problems with the code at some point (rootkit related) not so long ago, Mauserme warned us against this, but it seems that this thing has been fixed, and the use of SmitFraudFix and Combofix are secure again. So it is not actually so, but to say that nothing was there is beside the point. Malware and anti-Malware is an ongoing battle!
Good thing you read online and try to get informed, Adacatcher, we need these people here to later help out others, well done,
