Files infected and chested but what about the virus?
« on: November 08, 2007, 01:14:13 AM »
Hi guys....  I did a boot scan and 3 files were infected, with 2 different virus..

1) Win32:IRCBot-CHR  (trj)
2) Win32:Delf-GAJ   (trj)

I moved the files to the chest but what about the virus?  Is my Pc still infected and if so I do i get rid of them?

Cheers

It should be clean, there is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

Since these are trojans it is probably to use a specialist anti-spyware application as a back-up scan.

If you haven't already got this software try one (freeware), download, install, update and run it periodically.
1.  SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version. Or AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido) Resident scanner during trial On-Demand after trial ends. Or Spyware Terminator Resident scanner.

Personally I feel adaware is a bit of a lightweight (rarely found anything on my system but I didn't expect it to) by comparison so I would suggest also trying SuperAntiSpyware which I feel is a little better than AVG-AS, which doesn't seem to have advanced much since it was Ewido and bought by Grisoft.

You don't have to continue scanning till you find something there might be nothing there, it is a precautionary measure, confirmation that you are clean, rather than hoping to find something.

But the fact that files were infected by a virus, does it not mean that the virus is still on my Pc if it has not been removed ?  That is what i am worry about...

The files "are" the virus... they've been moved to Chest, so you're safe and clean.
Of course, you can confirm this with on-line scanning:
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
AVGas (does not necessary if you have AVG antispyware installed)
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
HitmanPro (multiply scanners)

Trojans aren't viruses they act in a different way.

The malware that you named were trojans and they aren't file infectors like a virus infects files by placing a small malicious part into existing files. With the exception of one trojan as far as I'm aware they don't infect other files and the trojans file content is completely malicious.

So once the actual trojan file is removed it generally doesn't present a risk as it shouldn't have infected other files.
