my scan and chest question
« on: November 13, 2007, 05:09:19 PM »
Hi  I did a scan and the results list came up. I have tried to  put them in the chest but it tells me an error has accured during moving file to the chest. it dont give the option to fix it and most are;
c:\windows\temp\mcu17f.temp\mps\.... the rest after that is changed some but since they are temp are they ok to delete them with no harm to my comp? These are all unable to scan things from avast I dont think any viruses or anything. Thank You Mrs T.

The \.... indicates there is more text in the column, e.g. the full path and file name, you need to expand the columns.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast 'a' icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

Temp files should generally be OK to remove the only issue might be those in use (usually created on that day). ClearProg - Temp File Cleaner or CCleaner - Temp File Cleaner, etc.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
