I think it may be because you have a very old program version and the virus definitions are way out of date that it may not be able to do an automatic virus definitions and engine update.
Is there any reason why your program is so old ?
Or is it just not updating automatically ?
Have you tried a manual update ?
What is your operating system and build number ?
Do you have any other security bases software installed ?
