We will need more information to be able to help you:
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Had in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially 'Errors'.
- Any hardware with troubles?

thank you
i installed the latest version of avast free home edition. avast 4.7.
i'm not familiar with firewall. i don't know what it is. please recommend a firewall program to download.
before the computer crashed i had avast as my antivirus.
my harddrive broke, the cause of the crash.
can i reinstall it without going thru the license ordeal again? i did a repair with no results.
if i do a reinstall how do i  completely uninstall everything?
i hope i covered everything.
thanks   pothound

Right now, I suggest you stay with Windows firewall. Let's solve your problem first of installing a 3rd party one.

before the computer crashed i had avast as my antivirus.
Haven't you tried another antivirus before? Doesn't the computer came with any antivirus pre-installed?

my harddrive broke, the cause of the crash.
What is broke? Can't you boot/login?

can i reinstall it without going thru the license ordeal again? i did a repair with no results.
if i do a reinstall how do i  completely uninstall everything?
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

You can use the one you got 4 days ago. It's good for about a year.

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

It won't be bad. But what I want is to check your log to see if there is any problem with the registration key.

i was emailed a new license,so i installed it.
Does it work?
Right click the 'a' blue icon, choose 'About' option and expand the expiration period (+) to see when the key expires.

i want to send my log,but i don't know how to attach it.
Open it in Notepad.
Go to the end, select approximately 200 lines from the bottom, copy & paste here.
