Resident Protection Incompatibility Message
« on: January 02, 2008, 01:16:01 AM »
I'm a new user to avast!, so I'm not sure if other people've ever encountered this problem before. When it comes to anything tech related, I'm a sitting duck anyway. Before using avast!, I had used a fairly well known AV software known as Norton AntiVirus. A few days ago, my subscription expired, and (not wanting to choke up another bundle of cash) I began searching for a free AV program.

Now, I know this is an incompatibility error, and can be easily resolved by just removing Norton AV, but it still seems rather odd to me. The first time I restarted my PC, I got this message;

So, naturally, I turned off what I thought to be Norton's "on access" protection, the Auto-Protect feature. I restarted my PC and I, yet again, saw the same message. However, the Resident Protection seemed to be working fine, judging from this;

So is this something I should worry about? Or is it just an annoying but meaningless message I'll have to ignore until I bother to remove Norton?

You need to full removing Norton (disabling is not enough).
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
3) Boot.
4) Uninstall avast from Control Panel first and boot.
5) Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation and boot.
6) Install again the last version and boot.
7) Check and post the results.
