good times
« on: January 10, 2008, 02:31:02 PM »
Dear avast! members,

I just want to share, unfortunately, my bad feelings. Although I've payed for avast Professional, I've dropped it and install Avira. It has some disadvantages in my first impressions, like having an HTML page being shown at each update or don't scan emails in the free version. But the advantages are so great!
The day before yesterday I've sent two new viruses samples to their lab (similar the system of sending samples to Alwil by the Chest). Yesteday they have already added both of them to the virus database. It's very different from avast that takes 10 days to do the same  :P

Besides this, I love their automatic response saying the files (samples) were received.

When you check a file in VirusTotal, almost each time, Avira has the right detection, the virus were already detected by them, even when very few antivirus detect them.

Although it's difficult for a non-English or non-German native, the interface is very good.

Well, bye bye avast. Hope Alwil team take a look seriously in the detection method and submission instead of promising to keep it to a non-scheduled avast 5 version.

I don't intend to be rude. Just trying to get the better for me.

Do you have Avira Classic (without Ad-/Spyware-Detection) or Avira Premium?

... and it has a lot of false positives  :-[

Avira Classic. Well, false positives I agree. Better false positives that you can check later in any online scanner, as a file you run and later note that it "was" a virus. And it is always possible to undo a quarentene file moving.

Never put your faith in one AV alone:

I tried latest Avira Classic a week ago. Full disk scan was hanging during scan directory with downloaded MS XP symbols (wmilib.sys).
No, thanks :)

Well, I understand that no AV is 100% safe. That's already not the question.
What I will point in this thread is that when I send a sample to Avira, in one day the new update includes analysis about this sample. And this is not the case with avast up until now. Maybe in the future.

You certainly have to give credit to AntiVir for their excellent submission system and response times-  just trying to find something positeve to say for avast!  :P
