longer update times
« on: January 09, 2008, 05:29:45 PM »
For the last several weeks, avast has been taking about 10 times as long as it used to to update. Anyone else noticed this? I'm not referring to downloading time but to the time the update icon remains in the tray.

Does this occur just after login or any update?
Please, post the last 100-150 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Every update. I infer that your answer to my question is No. This is happening not just on my own avast-equipped PC but on another that I help with.

Yeah... your log says that nothing is being done and the start/finished time are the same...
If I were you, I'll install from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Did that. No change. Two other PCs -- all three are WinXP Home SP2 -- are doing the same thing, so this is probably the new normal. Two 20-second gaps show up in the log, long after all downloading is done (I think), like this:

Quote
11.01.2008   13:10:16.000   1200078616   package   ArePartsInstallable: 1
11.01.2008   13:10:36.000   1200078636   package   vps: updated [8011100]

Hi Manitoban,

What firewall do you run, isn't this blocking the update process?

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

No. As I said, the downloading happens as quickly as ever, and the process completes itself, eventually.

Hi Manitoban,

I like to check a couple of things first to be able to evaluate this situation better, so please use the following tool for this by the name of StartDreck.
Download it from here: http://ben.cheetham.me.uk/download/niksoft/startdreck217.zip
Unzip the program, put it on your desktop, run a scan, and through the option save (at the bottom of the program window) make an logfile to attach to your next posting, and I look further into it,

Polonus,

That's kind of insulting. My PC is clean as a whistle; always has been, always will be. Anyway, I have an answer to my question, so we can close this thread. Every PC I've found in this neck of the woods that is running avast (just three so far) has undergone a recent, radical slowdown as per the original post. If I find a commonality among them I'll let you know.
