Yep had the same thing happen to my laptop. Not at all sure that Microsoft update install had anything to do with what you saw and experienced. More likely it was a temporary glitch in the Avast Driver Updater program.
As for updating drivers, I use the following rule:
- Never update a keyboard driver
- Never update an USB driver
- Never update a mouse driver
When one thinks about it, what could happen if any of these three drivers fail to install and the old working driver is gone?
- Keyboard fails to work
- USB devices fail to run
- Mouse or touchpad fail to work
To fix any bad driver install one needs one or all three input devices to work. If you can't input you can't change or install, the proper drivers, to fix your broken system.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Reason for updating drivers is reduce or eliminate any known security vulnerabilities in obsolete drivers. The 3 above should never be updated unless you are able to get a newer copy directly from your system manufacturer's website and you have a known good copy of a very recent backup of your system.
