Avast nuking machines
« on: March 22, 2024, 09:26:49 AM »
Hello all, I just had 2 machines crater using Avast Free. A laptop and a desktop. The desktop went first, it was shut down (orderly) for a physical move, and when it was restored, it showed the BSOD with error missing driver aswVmm.sys. Upon trying to restore that to a previous point, (I had JUST upgraded to a SSD and had the HDD to copy the file), it threw another error aswRvt.sys. It then rebooted, and said a required device couldn't be found or accessed. Upon trying to figure this out, I went to the laptop, and it too was BSOD'd. Same aswVmm error. Laptop cannot be "replaced", but I can easily have a restore point with the desktop. If I don't want to restore, is there anything I can do to kick Avast to the curb, without even going to Safe Mode? I can't seem to do that, either.

You can use the Avast removal tool, but that requires the computer to be booted into safe mode temporarily in order to do it properly.
