I have the same issue since last week. Firefox browser v115.14.0esr (64-bit), Windows 7 (don't ask why).

"Oops… the system encountered a problem (#001) - Retrying..."

When I turn off the Web Shield, the problem goes away.

Yep. That's three of us here dealing with this issue.

You can count me as another person that is having this issue with gmail.

I installed FF 129.0 and Avast says it is currently 24.7.6124 (24.7.9311.859) which means it secretly updated from 856 to 859...

Now I will be testing in the next few days and observing if the problem still occurs because I currently have no time for more tests.

That is a build number update you are referring to, the program version hasn't changed.  These could be bug fixes delivered either by virus definition update or emergency update function.

You don't say if you have program updates set to automatic or manual ?
- mine is set to manual and I haven't got build 24.7.6124 (24.7.9311.859), it is still on 24.7.6124 (24.7.9311.856) as in my signature.

I also just discovered that google.com is blank for me as well. I had not noticed before as i generally use google.ca which works fine. I guess that would explain also why the google search on the default Firefox page stopped working for me.

For now i just added google.com to Settings > General > Exceptions then restarted firefox and google.com is loading for me again.

Edit: Though the issue with gmail still keeps happening.

Haven't tried this. What about adding mail.google.com to exceptions? Would that make Gmail and Google vulnerable to viral attacks?

I have the same problem in Gmail:

"Oops… the system encountered a problem (#001) - Retrying..."

When I turn off the Avast Shields Control the message goes away.

I tried to email AVAST customer support. However, they are unreachable as they don't respond to free Avast users regardless of their own glitches.

Is there any way to report this to Avast?

So we now have a number of other users who are affected by this, not just the two or three of us that initially reported it.

I always have manual updates set for the program. This would have to be pushed through that second silent update mechanism that Avast has and doesn't brag about. :) The date (Jul 29) is also not too close, which suggests even more that it was a silent update without changing the date...

Another issue that occurs is that in those moments when the Gmail connection is intermittently lost, clicking on a link in an email will fail to open the link.

Also, Google Calendar will fail to work when attempting operations like editing an event.

I also have program updates set to manual and I haven't got the build number that you are reporting.  My update is reported as Jul 29, and that it is up to date for the version.  I suspect that the difference on the build number may depend on what Avast components you have installed if there was an update for that component.

There were a number of notifications at the start of this topic, I just wonder of depending what that could have an impact on the build number.

One change I notice today is that before Gmail would show the yellow popup "retrying in 1:00" or "55 seconds" or whatever and when I would click "retry now" it would change the number of seconds to an even longer period instead of refreshing.

Today when I clicked Retry Now it loaded the page correctly.

Are there really only two of us users that are experiencing this issue?? or are there others who are not reporting it because they haven't figured out that it is an Avast problem, not a Firefox or Google bug?

Clearly, disabling Avast web shields corrects the issue immediately, and then the issue recurs when Avast is enabled. This proves it is something in Avast, does it not?

I am having the same problem, for a week or so.  Was waiting for a fix to happen but Avast either isn't looking into it or haven't figured out how to fix it.

What update settings are recommended? I have both set to automatic, but I typically check for updates each morning when I start my PC...

For most users it will probably be best to set everything to automatic... Manual is useful when for some reason we want to control when the update should occur.
