Avast Graphic Interface Messed up with new Update
« on: September 15, 2024, 11:47:42 PM »
As title says, the latest update ruined the graphic interface to where it's impossible to get things done because the screens are out of whack with the resolution on my PC, so only a portion of the window fits in the interface, hard to explain but look at the picture below, it happens way too often whenever there is an update, please fix! And get your act together Avast!

What is the screen size and the resolution that you use  ?

There is some history in this regard, of small screen laptops with high resolution make the text very large.  Unfortunately the AvastUI is of a fixed size and the text within it would be very large.

I triggered the same alert at the site I have a 1080p laptop hooked up a 27" monitor 1440p @ 2560x1440 and that if I display the content on both the external monitor and laptop Displayed and resolution set to 2560x1440, it also fits the text in the Avast Alert window.  Though I don't think this is physically possible the view is just compressed in the laptop.

I've been running Avast on this computer for several years now, the problem is intermittent, it happens with some Avast updates, and goes away with a following update, so it's clearly something that the software writers mess up and then eventually fix.

Do you use UI scaling in Windows?

Text scaling at 150% is what is recommended and what I use, works perfectly, otherwise text would be extra small, not sure it affects the Avast interface though.

You could test. Set scaling to 100% and see if Avast is still messed up.

The more info to work off of the better.

Yes that is even higher than my 27" monitor and I suspect that would have an impact as the Avast UI isn't resizeable.

If as suggested you drop down the scaling to a point where it fits in temporarily.
For a very long time, over 20 years of my using Avast the UI hasn't been resize able and even then it cause some issues.

I use 120% scaling with my large 1440p monitor.

I'll try changing the scaling when I'm back on the PC with the issue, but that means all my other programs will have too small text, not something I can live with, and besides, as I mentioned before, the problem comes and goes with Avast updates, which makes me think the issue is not the scaling but something that is altered when changes are made to the program, otherwise it would always be messed up, not just between updates.

Does this only happen you get an Avast Alert, if so only change it then.

I don't know how often you go into the User Interface, is it the same when you do ?
I suspect that may be the case, otherwise is it only the fixed size Avast Alert window ?

I go into the user interface almost every day, every window from Avast is out of whack, not just the alerts.

I wasn't suggesting that you keep the scaling at 100%. Just to change it temporarily when you notice the Avast UI is bugging out, and see if that fixes it.

It will tell us, and hopefully the Avast devs, if the problem is related to (how Avast handles) UI scaling or not.

Understood, I will give the scaling a shot once I'm back on the PC with the issue and report back. This would not require to reboot to take effect on the Avast interface will it?

OK I can replicate the problem, and it seems to be a scaling issue indeed.

Avast build: 24.8.9372 (build 24.8.9372.871)

Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise 22621.4169

Display: 42" UHD OLED 3840x2160 @ 120 Hz

I set my scaling from 100% to 150% and this was the resulting Avast window.

Setting scaling back to 100% kept the Avast window like this, until I minimized and un-minimized the window by clicking on the Avast taskbar 'button' (because the top right side buttons were missing due to said scaling issue).

Upon coming back up again it had returned to normal. Basically I forced a refresh of the window. Closing and re-opening has the same effect.

So it seems Avast doesn't always handle scaling correctly, and currently it is messed up.

BTW: my 'recommended' scaling is 300% lol.

Nope. I just did my testing on the fly. Changes take effect immediately and so does reversing them. Except Avast needs a kick in the pants to redraw its main window by forcing a refresh.

That unfortunately is the problem of the Avast Fixed size UI (yet the text within it seems to conform with the Windows browser/OS zoom levels), something that really needs to be addressed by Avast, in these days of large screen and or very high resolutions.
