Can I use Avast (the free version) to check for viruses on my flash memeory (the insertable memory device, drive E: in my XP pc? How do I do that?

Insert the drive, right click it, select scan. Or from the simple user interface select E:

Thanks much. FWIMBW to other beginners: clicking the Removable Media option seemed to allow scanning only an A:\ drive. But I learned that Skipppng that option brought up the D: drive and another skip brought up the E: drive.
