Amount of protection on pc
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:34:54 PM »
 :) :) :)
Hello.
I have just had a clean bill of health after being infected with a Trojan, thanks to oldman.
My question is, I am presently running Spyware detector, Spyware Doctor, Avast Home Edition, I have windows firewall and Zone Alarm Firewall because I had no outgoing protection, and am running windows clean, a programme suggested by oldman, thanks again!!!!
Oh yes and Spybot search and destroy, but to honest I turned the Tea timer off because of all the info I was getting and I think it might have removed  the ability to run my printer cause that stopped one day after running with that, I did manage to get the printer back by doing a system restore. I can put up with the 10 minute start up, yes 10 minutes, if it means I am safe, or am i just being TOO cautious!!!
Your advice would be appreciated.

Spyware Detector was previously listed as a rogue anti-spyware but de-listed. Me there are many other anti-spyware applications without this history to give it a miss, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#de-listed.

Turn off the Windows Firewall. ZoneAlarm protects both ways.
You shouldn't run 2 Firewall programs.

Oh Wow! I did not realise that Spyware Detector had that history!
You really think that I should drop that from  my computer DavidR?

If I turn off windows firewall will Zone Alarm will OK, the Zone Alarm is the free version. bob3160

Sorry about not being clear about my question Tech.
Its this...Have I got too much Spyware and anti virus protection on my PC?
I am not bothered about the start up time if everything is OK, but will having so many different types of spyware and anti-virus cause me problems?
I obviously know that to take some off, would increase the start up time of the PC.

Also the teatimer that comes with Spybot, I am a bit nervous about, and have turned off!! ???
What do think?? Should I leave it on?
Your advice about these thoughts would be appreciated. :)
Many thanks.
Sparks.

I still would not use Spyware Detector. ScanDoo gives it's site a very bad rating.

Click the picture below to enlarge it.

McAfee also gives the site a bad rating however, it rates the download of the
program itself as clean???

Hi bob3160,

Spyware Warrior:  De-listed apps from 2006 include:  Spyware Detector, Advanced Spyware Remover, Spyware Terminator

So take that for what it is worth, but I like to use one from the recommended list:

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Polonus,
That wasn't a recommendation. Just passing along information.  :)

<snip>

I think the subsequent replies really have answered that, there are plenty of other applications to choose from. You already have Spyware Doctor, so could easily drop spyware detector, if you wanted a back-up on-demand anti-spyware you have spybot S&D, but I would suggest SuperAntiSpyware as a back-up AS scanner.

Hi malware fighters,

But without the right information we cannot make a rightful decision.
I understand perfectly well what you mean.

But I can understand that newbies cannot see a trusted from a rogue scanner, the line between trusted and malicious is a thin one, go and look here: http://www.spywareguide.com/index.php

Indeed, Spyware doctor (With spybot S&D as a backup) should surfice, keeping spyware detector would be a risk in my opinon.

Although i would suggest a program called SpywareBlaster, i really love this program and highly recomend it on the basis of prevenetion is better then cure.

You may even want to browse the rest javacool website, it quite a few interesting programs.
